He then undertook a two-year advanced clinical fellowship in interventional cardiology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

During this time, Dr Somaratne gained extensive experience in complex coronary interventions, coronary physiology, intra-coronary imaging, catheter-based renal denervation, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). He was also involved in several first-in-man and investigator-initiated studies, contributing to advancements in the field.

In 2014, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Preventative Cardiology at the University of Auckland. Before returning to New Zealand in 2016, he served as a consultant interventional cardiologist at both St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals in Melbourne.

Dr Somaratne is currently an interventional cardiologist at Auckland City Hospital and The Heart Group, with procedural responsibilities at both Auckland City Hospital and IntraCare. He plays an active role in teaching and mentoring cardiology trainees and fellows and is involved in the recruitment and management of several ongoing clinical trials.

Areas of Interest

His research interests focus on the delivery of interventional cardiology services in New Zealand and the contemporary management of acute coronary syndromes and their long-term outcomes. He enjoys strong collaborative research links both locally and internationally.
