Interventional Cardiologist

Dr Karsten Tange Veien is a cardiologist originally trained in Denmark, where he spent many years as a senior consultant at leading university hospitals in Odense and Aarhus, managing complex coronary interventions and valve procedures. He has shared his expertise across the Nordic countries, supervising colleagues and contributing to the development of advanced heart treatments, before moving to New Zealand. This experience gives him a broad, global perspective on modern heart care.

Dr Veien is now a Senior Cardiologist at Auckland City Hospital and specialises in minimally invasive treatments for heart disease, including complex coronary procedures and catheter-based valve therapies. He has a particular interest in advanced treatments for mitral and tricuspid valve disease, and is actively involved in introducing and refining new techniques in this field.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Veien is engaged in teaching, research, and professional leadership, and is a regular speaker at international cardiology meetings. He is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care using the latest evidence-based treatments.

Outside of work, Karsten enjoys exploring New Zealand with his family, often with a kayak on the roof of the car and running shoes close at hand.
